J1255N Zimconserve Permaculture Resource Centre
Zimbabwe, Africa

The Situation
Seke Rural, located 52 miles east of Harare, Zimbabwe, faces significant development challenges stemming from climate change impacts and limited infrastructure. The community of approximately 5,100 people depends heavily on subsistence agriculture, but recurring droughts and traditional farming methods have led to persistent food insecurity affecting 70% of households. Average household monthly income is only $85 USD, with limited opportunities for income diversification. Women constitute 64% of household leaders in the target area but lack access to sustainable income-generating activities. The community has existing successful agricultural initiatives but requires secure infrastructure and training to expand and protect these investments.
The Objectives
The Zimconserve Permaculture Resource Centre will establish a comprehensive facility to enhance food security and generate sustainable income for 300 direct beneficiaries and 4,800 indirect beneficiaries. The project will construct a multi-purpose resource center on a secure 5-hectare site, featuring classroom spaces, demonstration gardens, and protected growing environments. Through training in permaculture techniques and sustainable agriculture, the project aims to increase household income by 40% within 12 months. Income-generating enterprises including mushroom farming, fish farming, and nutrition gardens will provide diversified revenue streams while building climate resilience. The center will serve as a hub for community learning and agricultural innovation, with strong emphasis on women's empowerment and leadership development.
