The Situation

The RaiseHer Rwanda project empowers women and teen mothers in Nyagatare and Gatsibo, focusing on areas affected by GBV and social exclusion. Using evidence from national and community studies, it addresses the barriers that limit women’s participation in peacebuilding. The project promotes sustainable, community-driven change to reduce gender inequality and violence.

The Objective

To empower women and teen mothers in Nyagatare and Gatsibo districts of Rwanda by strengthening their leadership, protection, and participation in peacebuilding and social cohesion efforts. The project aims to enhance community resilience against gender-based violence (GBV), promote social inclusion, and foster sustainable collaboration between women’s groups and local authorities, thereby contributing to a safer, more equitable, and peaceful society in post-conflict and semi-urban settings.

Leadership & Advocacy Training – Train 150 women and teen mothers as Peace & Protection Champions with skills in women’s rights, conflict resolution, and GBV prevention to promote gender equality and peaceful practices in their communities.
Community Dialogues – Engage over 5,800 stakeholders, including men, local officials, and religious leaders, in discussions on GBV, women’s rights, and social cohesion to shift attitudes, reduce stigma, and foster inclusive peacebuilding.
Awareness & Education Materials – Develop and distribute culturally relevant posters, flyers, and digital content to reinforce key messages on women’s empowerment, community safety, and peaceful coexistence.
Rapid Response & Referral System – Establish a community-led, survivor-centred system linking women leaders, local organisations, law enforcement, and service providers to ensure immediate support and coordinated responses for GBV survivors.
