J1057N Bhutan Higher Education Scholarships
Bhutan, Indian Subcontinent
In partnership with Himalayan Higher Education
The Situation
The rationale for this project is to address two material problems in Bhutan
1. The Himalayan nation’s exposure to natural disasters and economic risks from climate change; and
2. The underrepresentation of women in professional and management decision making categories in the Bhutanese workforce.
The Objectives
Our solution is to build up Bhutan’s human resource capacity in climate change adaptation through a tertiary education and employment ready program which provides financially disadvantaged young women from rural Bhutan with
1. Access to BSc Environmental Management degrees at Royal Thimphu College in Bhutan; and
2. Access to internships, mentoring and supplemental coaching to help them build their confidence and self-belief and to impact the environmental sector in Bhutan by eventually gaining professional and management decision making positions.
The impact of this project on Bhutan and the women’s families and communities could extend well past 2050 as these women pursue long careers in environmental management within government, intergovernmental and private sector entities in Bhutan.
The project is managed by Carolyn Hamer-Smith who is an experienced aid program manager and a permanent resident of Thimphu, Bhutan. We have worked with Global Development Group since the establishment of the project in 2021.
