The Situation
Newlife Cambodia Mission runs an Education and Compassion Program supporting disadvantaged children from nearby villages and slums in Poipet, Cambodia. Poipet is a border city in north-western Cambodia with high levels of poverty, migration and informal employment. Many families rely on unstable work in cross-border trade, construction or casino-related industries, resulting in insecure housing and irregular incomes. Children are often required to work or care for siblings, limiting school attendance and increasing dropout rates. Access to quality education is constrained by overcrowded government schools and costs such as uniforms, transport and supplies. Health emergencies and food insecurity frequently place families in crisis. Without targeted education, skills training and emergency support, children in Poipet remain at risk of ongoing intergenerational poverty.
The Objectives
- Education/Sponsorship: Education allows for children to develop skills, including language, trade and professional skills, to eventually be able to contribute to Cambodian society and care for their families.
- Emergency relief: Emergency relief serves to solve an immediate problem, such as a medical condition or temporary food shortage.
- Facilities Development: The construction of training facilities, schools and teacher accommodation provides a safe and suitable environment for children to study and provides jobs for those developing the site.
By equipping disadvantaged children with education and skills, the program empowers them to improve their lives and lift their communities out of poverty.
